The process of buying a bike should start with answering a few simple questions that will help you choose the right type, model and level of equipment:
On what road surface and for what purpose will you use the bike?
How often and intensively do you plan to use the bike?
How often will the bike be transported and under what storage conditions?
If you plan to use a bicycle for your daily commute to and from work, the first thing you should do is look into the possibility of buying a bicycle for urban and daily use. Urban bikes will be comfortable and suitable for urban infrastructure and for use with casual/office wear. They are usually well equipped with efficient mudguards and a rack for carrying panniers.
If you tend to go out after work or on weekends for leisure or training rides, it's worth considering a fitness and leisure bike that can be used as both a daily commuter and a training bike.
Fitness and active recreation bikes can be equipped with a shock absorber, which will allow you to ride comfortably on trails and gravel roads. Modern fitness bikes can also be adapted for touring if needed.
If you're into leisure rides or training rides on country roads, forest trails and rough terrain, then a durable mountain bike with a shock absorber and wide tyres for good grip and traction will suit you best.
If you are a regular bike user and tend to start a journey without knowing the route and duration, then a gravel bike is the right choice to get you to any destination. A gravel bike will be fast enough on hard surfaces and suitable for long journeys, even on gravel roads. Modern gravel bikes can be adapted for everyday use and even converted into a so-called "singlespeed".
If you plan to do long endurance rides on good quality tarmac roads and occasionally take part in group training or races, then a road bike with low weight and low rolling resistance will suit you.
Once you've chosen your bike's use and intelligence, be sure to try several models and sizes. Visually similar bikes tend to have different frame geometries, seats, grips, tyres and other details that create a very different riding experience for each rider.
Start the test ride by adjusting the seat height, and during the ride try accelerating, braking, shifting, fork action. All other things being equal, trust your intuition and choose the bike you feel most comfortable on!
The price of a bicycle will depend on many different factors and can range from a few hundred to several thousand euros for each category of bicycle. A more expensive bike will definitely be lighter, roll easier, have a wider gear range - all of which will increase your riding fun and, very likely, your time on the bike!
Our advice is to focus on the use of the bike, not the division into men's and women's bikes. Tell the advisor how you plan to use your bike and under what conditions.
If, after several rides, you still don't feel comfortable on your new bike, adjust the height and reach of the seat and handlebars to suit your height. If this doesn't help, you may need to make a small investment to replace the seat and handlebars to better suit your height.
