Mountain bikes, or MTBs, are the most popular type of bicycle in Latvia because they are durable and can be ridden on a variety of road surfaces in any terrain, but they are not really suitable for long-distance riding on asphalt because the wide tread tyres take a lot of the rider's power. A mountain bike is usually significantly heavier than a road bike of similar quality.
Mountain bikes will almost always have a shock-absorbing fork up front to smooth out road irregularities, wide treaded tyres for good grip and high traction, a wide speed range (>10), disc brakes for efficient braking and manoeuvring.
