The battery is one of the three important components of an electric bicycle (the others are: the electric motor, the frame with wheels and other parts). It is thanks to the rapid development of battery technology that both cars and electric bikes have become a real alternative to traditional combustion engine cars and traditional bicycles.

Why lithium-ion batteries? Lithium-ion batteries are characterised by a very high stored energy density, so it can store a relatively large amount of energy with a relatively low total battery mass. A Shimano or Bosch 625-630W battery will weigh approximately 2.5-4kg. For this reason, lithium-ion batteries are the most popular and efficient type of battery in electric bicycles. The Li-ion batteries used in electric bicycles are very similar in nature to the Li-ion battery in any of your smart devices.

How long will Li-ion batteries last? The batteries are robust and designed for long life (several years) and multiple use. Modern batteries have built-in electronics to protect them from overheating, overcharging or discharging too deeply, but their useful life will depend on many conditions of use.

How can I extend the useful life of my batteries? The most effective way to extend the useful life of your battery is to follow the basic rules for storage, transport and charging. The optimum storage temperature for batteries is between 10-20C in a dry room without direct exposure to sunlight and the optimum charge level is 30-60%. When transporting an electric bicycle, it is important to remove the battery from the bicycle and place it safely in the car interior.

How long will it take to charge the battery? The battery charge will depend on the total capacity of the battery (W/h) and the battery charge level at the start of the charge. A completely empty 500 W/h battery will take 4-5 hours to charge with a standard charger, but manufacturers also offer more powerful chargers that can reduce charging time by 30-40%.

What should I do when washing electric bikes? Electric bikes are designed for use in wet weather - the batteries and bikes are designed to protect the electrical components from moisture droplets and mud, but direct exposure to the battery with a high-pressure wash compressor is not recommended. Before washing the bicycle, remove the battery and wipe it with a damp, detergent-free cloth.

How often can the battery be charged? The battery can be recharged at any time and at any level of charge, for example in the Bosch tests after 1500 discharge/recharge cycles the battery still retained 30% of its original energy capacity - this means that the battery had a potential range of 57,000 km. Leaving the battery in hibernation at 30-60% charge does not require additional recharging.

Can the electric bike and battery be used in autumn/winter? Yes, you can. It is recommended to remove and store the battery at room temperature after the ride and to put it on the bike only shortly before the ride, also charging at room temperature (10-20C) is recommended. In winter/autumn, make sure your bike is equipped with appropriate lights, wear suitable clothing and take extra care on the road.

Disposal of used batteries. Take your used batteries to your dealer or to specialised companies that have been duly authorised to collect and recycle batteries. Never dispose of batteries in everyday/common waste containers or bins.
